Wyatt's faces

I can't neglect my little man here after writing and posting so many pictures of his big sister.

Wyatt is obsessed with my camera - he brings it to me all the time and says "CHEEEESE", which means "take a picture of me momma and then let me have the camera." I'm usually game for the first part, but letting him have the camera is rarely an option - but always a good tantrum instigator!

He's pretty consistent in his "cheese" face!

and because I'm in love with this diaper I have to show off my new Jamtots Berry Plush in Turquoise with an embroidered bottom! I won this in an auction on the Granola Chicks Ringfor $15.50. Once I got it and saw how soft it was and how absorbent I went looking to price more - well, let's just say I got a STEAL on this diaper as they retail for close to $30 each! I'm loving it though and it's getting lots of use - I dig through my stash just to put it on his cute little bottom! I want more of these, but I'll have to sell some of my other diapers to get them! (Hey if you're looking I'm selling my Bum Genius 3.0s because Wyatt always takes them off)

No matter if it's his bottom or his little face all scrunched up - he's a cutie pie!

A crafty kind of day

Most people who know me well know that I love to sew and do crafty things - whether it's an art project with the kids or something just for me.

I've had piles of material sitting on the kitchen counter - for weeks! I've been eyeing my best friend Becca's cloth napkins that her mom made for her - oh for about 2 years now. I love going to eat at her house and picking out which one I want for that day. Hers are all Mary Engelbreit designs and I really love them!

So a few weeks ago I decided to make my own napkins - except I never got around to sewing them - just cutting a few out...

So even though I have all this fabric at my house I was tempted to buy more at Jo-Ann's Fabrics today. I swear I cannot walk out of that store without spending more than $20 on fabric. After I left today I called Becca to say that I needed to find a support group for Fabric Hoarders Anonymous!

However, I think the "new" fabric was enough to get me motivated to do some sewing. My original intention was just to let Maddie pick out fabric for her new babydoll sling - since the one I made earlier this morning wasn't PINK - and she HAD to have pink!

The new napkin fabric was just a bonus. You'll only get to see one of the patterns that I picked out because I haven't sewn the other set yet. I only got a half yard of the fabrics because I didn't want to be overwhelmed. I actually like it in half yard sections though because I can cut it 18"x18" and have enough left over to make two small napkins as well!

In addition to the sling and cloth napkins I also made Maddie another napkin out of the leftover butterfly material from her sling. I also bought one of those easy dresses with the seersucker in the chest and made her a cute little dress with ribbon ties.

I'm inspired now to MAYBE look for an easy dress pattern for her. I used to know how to do all that stuff - I just need to re-learn I guess.

Oh and get a better machine at some point. Mine has decided that it will no longer zig zag stitch - it works for about 20 stitches, goes straight and then goes back to its erratic stitching. VERY frustrating!

Oh well, I can dream :)

Games they play

The newest game in the Hinze household consists of taking throw pillows and lining them up on the floor.

Maddie and Wyatt take turns balancing and stepping from each to the next.

A game of stepping stones I guess. It keeps them busy for quite a while though and the giggles are never ending. Maddie, of course, is much more agile than her younger brother, but he's getting the hang of it rather quickly.

Lady bug diary

The days are longer - my nights are definitely shorter and outside things are growing like crazy. We're out in the backyard every day - watering plants, pulling weeds and playing. About a week ago we made an amazing discovery: We have lady bugs - everywhere.

The day before Mother's Day Maddie, Wyatt and I were at the local nursery buying some flowers. They carry ladybugs and praying mantis's - but were all out of lady bugs. We looked at the pictures of the larvae and the image of the buggies really stood out in my mind.

A few days before that Maddie had come to me with one of those tall, weedy pieces of grass - yelling that she found a lady bug.

It was a lady bug and two other weird looking bugs just kind of hanging out with it. She was in awe and I was proud of my daughter for finding cool things in our yard.

I walked back outside a little while later and she informed me that she no longer liked those bugs and so she'd smushed them.

I was a little upset and tried to explain to her that she'd just killed innocent little bugs- whatever kind they were.

Fast forward to Mother's Day - it dawned on me that those 2 funny looking bugs were actually lady bug larvae.

They look like this:

So this discovery started a little science experiment in our yard. We accidentally discovered that our lady bugs really loved the lantana growing in our yard. We quickly found several ladybug pupaes on the underside of leaves:

We picked a few of the leaves and put them in a spare aquarium in the hopes of seeing a lady bug emerge:

The leaves didn't last very long, but we had 2 lady bugs "hatch" and are waiting for 2 more to come out and play:

I actually bought maddie a book about lady bugs a few weeks ago and we were able to learn everything we needed to know about the life cycle of a lady bug. Our moments outside are spent hunting for lady bugs and we've realized that we are a rich environment for the friendly bugs as there are lots of aphids - their favorite foods and everywhere we look we find either mature lady bugs or larvae and were even able to find some eggs yesterday!

Unfortunately for me, the eggs were laid on one of my towels so I have to wait for the eggs to hatch in a few days so I can wash my towel. Right now it's crawling with itty bitty larvae.

eggs:

newly hatched egglets:

a different batch on the same towel:

Once the eggs hatch the larvae eat like crazy until they have to molt and get bigger. I caught this little guy trying to wiggle the rest of the way out of his old skin:

the other popular place in our yard is the discarded propane tank:

he finally wiggled free - i helped him a little bit - he'd been struggling for almost an hour! I just held the backside down firmly and he finally popped out!:

Here you can see a pupae and a larvae right under it!

You see a lot of ladybugs hanging near the larvae- I even saw one today that was pushing a larvae around literally!

it's been a great lesson for maddie. She hasn't killed a bug since discovering that lady bugs are friendly creatures. She'll even let them climb on her arms now :)

(more later, can't keep my eyes open)

Oh where have you gone baby boy, baby boy?

From the time I dropped wyatt off in the nursery at church last night to the time I picked him up 2 hours later - I swear something changed.

When I left him he was still babyish, but when they brought him to me his hair looked like it had grown 2 inches and the shape of his face changed - he looked like a little boy.

I guess it was bound to happen eventually - that change from looking babyish to looking more like a toddler. I remember when it happened with Maddie and the awe and simultaneous sense of loss I felt.

He's growing up so quickly - talking more and more each day. Every word I say he repeats back to me and then tucks it into his ever growing vocabulary.

He climbs onto everything. So many times I've walked out of a room and returned to find him standing on top of something - the coffee table, dining room table, couch. He's mastered the couch quite well now - loving to climb up there and run from one end to the other - laughing the whole time.

Right now he's walking around the living room - terrorizing the toys - all the while holding tightly onto the TV remote. At 16 months he knows how to turn the TV on and off and how to change channels.

He's a very good independent little man. He'll often sit for 10, 20 or more minutes playing with a toy - and seriously at that.

I love it when he runs up to me and puts his arms around my neck and hugs me while saying, "awww." He gives great kisses too! He's so sweet and loving and it's making this raising a boy thing a lot easier than I anticipated.

He's always asking me to "open" things - the TV, the piano, the door.

He gets up most mornings and goes straight to the back or front door and says, "outside" and then quickly follows it with "Go" and "bye."

Up and Down are other favorites - as I watch him trying to climb onto the couch again. He's so independent and so sure of himself. He has places to go and people to see and things to say. It cracks me up when someone picks him up and he turns to their face and just starts jabbering. He's talking in sentences that only he understands for now, but we'll catch on quickly I know. The other day my brother picked him up and Wyatt turned to face him in his arms and quite matter of factly and seriously told him something substantial. Wyatt's body language made it clear that he was trying to communicate something and that he expected a response!

He's such a boy - loves cars and trucks and playing outside. Anything that is a wheel or has a steering wheel is an instant obsession. If you let him into the front seat of your vehicle you have to pry his little fingers off to get out. When we get ready to leave the house - if Mike's truck is in the driveway - Wyatt makes it clear that he'd much rather ride in the truck than in Mommy's van.

Despite all this independence and growing up - he still needs me though. He comes up to me so many times a day and asks for "Mak, Mak, Mak." He's saying "milk," but hasn't quite gotten the full pronunciation yet. He always says it three times in a row, too - which makes it even more cute for me. I like that he still needs me and finds comfort in these little moments - though once done he's quickly out of my arms and back to business conquering new heights or crashing towers or chasing the cat - whom he has an extra special relationship with it seems. She lets him lay all over her - never biting or growling or scratching - she actually seems to enjoy the attention.

So the tune of "Billy Boy" is in my head this morning...

Oh where have you gone baby boy, baby boy?
Oh where have you gone my little baby?
I have gone to build a train, play with cars and say my name
I'm a big boy but still I need my mommy

Can you speak and can you run baby boy baby boy
Can you climb and can you go little baby

I can climb and I can run I can do most anything
I'm a big boy, but still I love my mommy.

Moving over....

I have some favorite journals about the kids that I am moving over from my Livejournal blog, so if things seem out of place - that's why!

Naval Museum/Fort Barrancas

*I just found this entry in the "Drafts" folder of my email program. I think I started writing it on the way home from Pensacola... 2 months ago! Since I'd already done so much writing I decided to post it - incomplete at this point, but at least it's up here!

May 3, 2008

Our day started a little later than usual - Maddie and Wyatt were gracious with our sleep - letting us stay in bed until 7:15 a.m. instead of the usual 6:30 a.m. from Wyatt lately.

It was dark and a bit dreary - the rain was coming for sure this time. The radar was threatening-looking and I worried that our plans for the day were going to be washed away.

We were slow - hot tea, oatmeal for maddie and yogurt for wyatt. Mike kept trying to climb back in bed and go to sleep - "I just need a 20 minute nap," he said. This coming from the man who got 10 UNINTERRUPTED hours of sleep last night! I went to bed a good 2 hours after him and got up with Wyatt once and was already awake before the kids woke up for the day.

I eventually decided that wyatt needed a nap and seeing he was running around in one of his cute tie dyed prefold diapers and no cover - i threw a pair of wool longies on him and put him to bed in his crib. No disagreement from him - which was rare. I told Mike I was going to take a shower with Maddie and asked him to go out to the van and unload some of the junk that had accumulated over the last six months.

That project turned into a much longer than antici
pated one... I think it took about 2 hours, but mike vacuumed and washed the inside windows, which really needed to be done. It was so nice to have a cleaned out vehicle - of course packing for a day trip just put a lot of stuff back into it, but oh well.

Maddie was already in her car seat watching a movie, so I took her with me to fuel up and run to the drug store to pick up some necessities. When we got back home Mike was showered and dressed and Wyatt was still asleep!

I sent Mike out to sit with Maddie and I woke up Wyatt - only to see that his diaper and cover had leaked all over his bed... I quickly changed his diaper and got him dressed, made a mental note to strip his bed when we got back home and loaded him into his car seat.

Did I mention that we decided to move him to forward facing? He's about 22 lbs now and 16 months old yesterday. Mike said he was ready to do it, but I'm still not sure. Wyatt's not sure what to think - and I can see the downside of him being able to see me as I'm driving. I think that's a big benefit to being rear facing - they can't see you!

We timed our trip perfectly - the rain started really coming down shortly after we went through the drive thru at McDonald's - a special treat for a family day. We were out of the worst of it within 15 minutes and by the time we arrived in Pensacola the rain had stopped and a nice breeze remained.

Our original plan was to attend the crawfish festival, but upon arriving at the location and seeing it was a little on the small side - and required us to pay $5 each for Mike and I to get in - we decided to forget the festival and go to the Naval Air Museum instead.

It was a much better choice - and free at that!

The kids loved the planes and boats - they were excited. They climbed in the cockpits of the planes and for a few moments they were Navy pilots fighting in the first World War...

After about an hour at the museum we loaded back up and decided to check out Fort Barrancas - which was actually really neat! Not entirely stroller friendly, but pretty cool nonetheless. At the top of the fort you could look over the wall and see the Pensacola Bay - almost like it would have looked a hundred years ago - minus the buildings and erosion.
